So one of the things that struck me as being important to figure out before the trip to China, was of course how to circumvent China's censorship of Google and its products. Gmail and Blogger, by all accounts, would not work. Despite the fact that my blogging has been erratic at best, and consistently infrequent, it is of course a priority that I should be able to blog while there. It is of paramount important that I be able to update the world (the "world" here being my small selected readership) on our comings and goings and adventures in the far east. So important that I am still up at 3 a.m. trying to figure this out.
I know, I can get a VPN. I have in the course of my research last week gained a vague understanding on what a VPN is and how it works, though I cannot pretend to know any specifics. Nor do I really know what to do with this VPN once I "get" it. I assume it would be explained to me if I really wanted to know. I don't. I'm there for a limited time, and blogging is really not essential. If there is an easy way to get around the censorship though, I sure am going to try. Even if only to post the one post.
So this is my test post: posting via email. And then, with the help of an predetermined trigger via If This Then That (https://ifttt.com/) having the link to the blog post being automatic posted to Facebook. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Well, it's not quite so easy as that though! I've tried this a few times now, trying to find the right balance between privacy and limiting the information I provide (as far as it can be believed that the boxes you check actually limit the accessibility of information) and having the link appear on Facebook and be able to be seen by others. The fact that it is 3 a.m. might have something to do with my struggle, though I think I have finally it sussed it out now.
Elementary step for some, ground breaking for me!
